The true measure of St. Vincent Haven's impact is found in the stories of the men whose lives have been transformed through our programs. Here are some of those stories.

Mitchell came to St. Vincent Haven after years of struggling with addiction and homelessness. Through the Haven's case management program, he was connected with treatment resources, found stable employment, and secured permanent housing. Today, Mitchell is a testament to what is possible when a man is given the support and opportunity to rebuild his life.
Eugene, a 70-year-old man living on retirement income, came to the shelter after having lost his way. His brother had passed recently, which sent him into a downward spiral. With no other family or friends to turn to, he came to the Haven. He quickly became a resident that staff could count on to step up and help when they needed a volunteer. He ultimately gained the title of trustee. Eugene worked with community partners and Haven staff tirelessly to find housing he could afford on his fixed income. He completed all the tasks on his action plan, including saving his money diligently. He spent his free time walking the streets of Licking County looking for apartments for rent. The holes worn in his shoes from miles of searching were a reminder of the goal in mind. After a long search, the right place came available. He was approved quickly. Overnight, he went from walking the streets, to having a place to call home.
James came to the shelter after his childhood home caught fire. He had inherited the home after his grandfather passed. With the only home he had ever known gone, he wasn't sure where to turn. He came to the Haven with very little, most of his things lost in the fire. Not only was James dealing with the loss of his home, he had a medical condition that limited his physical capabilities. Despite his physical limitations, he left the Haven daily making an effort to accomplish the items on his action plan. He returned each day with a positive attitude and a willingness to step up and help staff in any way he could. Staff assisted James in scheduling appointments and transportation to doctor's appointments as well as the process to hopefully obtain a power wheelchair. Staff worked with James on housing applications and appointments. With limited mobility, a unit without stairs and laundry on site was necessary. With the help of Haven staff and community partners, James was able to secure an apartment that checked all the boxes. He now has a place he can call home.
Michael's story is unlike many we encounter at St. Vincent Haven. With no history of substance use, no mental-health concerns, and not so much as a parking ticket on his record, Michael still found himself experiencing homelessness. Physical and developmental challenges made stable housing incredibly difficult to maintain. Soon, he lost his apartment and was sleeping outside — yet he never missed a day of work. A caring Good Samaritan listened, understood, and guided Michael to the Haven. From the moment he arrived, his kindness and determination stood out. During his stay, Michael became a quiet leader among the men at the shelter. He completed his chores faithfully and even taught others skills they had never learned. Because epilepsy prevents him from driving, he saved every dollar he could after paying for transportation to work. His positive attitude and example earned him the role of shelter trustee. Michael's hard work also shone through at his job at a local grocery store, where he was promoted to a management position while staying at the Haven. After a long and persistent housing search, he finally secured an apartment within walking distance of his workplace. Michael left St. Vincent Haven with meaningful savings, stability, and everything he needed to make his new place a home.
Mark arrived at St. Vincent Haven facing significant challenges, including major hip issues and near-blindness. His situation was so dire that it required a handout rather than our usual practice of offering a hand up. After being laid off from his job, he found himself without essential documents like an ID and birth certificate, and he struggled to access basic needs like food stamps. However, through the support of our dedicated staff, Mark underwent eye surgery that restored his vision to 20/20. He also had one hip replaced. Mark was very good at completing chores during his time at The Haven. The restoration of his sight brought him great joy! With the assistance of our team, he secured subsidized housing. Soon, he will undergo a second hip replacement. Mark's transformation is a testament to the power of faith and support at The Haven.
Phil, a 56-year-old Army Veteran, arrived at The Haven after facing severe depression, a history of alcoholism, and the loss of his wife. Living in his truck prior to seeking help, he struggled with self-worth and suicidal thoughts. During his stay, Phil's overwhelming physical health challenges were treated by a primary care physician. He was also connected with behavioral health professionals for medication and counseling. He began volunteering in the community, which played a significant role in his recovery. Blessed, he secured a Permanent Supportive Housing voucher and remains focused on his physical and mental health and sobriety. Phil left our program six months sober, feeling committed to giving back to both the community and St. Vincent Haven.
Brad arrived at The Haven just three days after his release from jail, facing probation and a daunting $1,500 in fines. With support from our team, he quickly secured a job and worked diligently throughout his stay. Brad successfully paid off all his fines and fees, completed his probation requirements, and even received a promotion that came with a $4 pay increase. By the time he moved into his own apartment, he had saved over $4,000, which allowed him to purchase everything he needed for his new home. Brad's story is one of resilience and hope, showcasing how The Haven leads to remarkable transformations.
At 72 years old, Ronald faced unique challenges, including a diagnosis of Alzheimer's and sclerosis of the liver. After briefly staying with his children, he sought help at St. Vincent Haven. Our team assisted him in exploring housing options and navigating the complexities of insurance for his medication, which had an exorbitant monthly cost. Despite being denied subsidized housing initially, Ronald had $1,000 in savings and was desperately in need of a stable living situation. His family ultimately found him an affordable apartment, and he received the necessary home health services to support his well-being. Ronald's story highlights the importance of family support and community assistance in overcoming personal struggles, proving that it's never too late to seek a better life.
Ben came to St. Vincent Haven during a vulnerable time. He was dropped off by his niece. He had some savings at the time. Initially facing uncertainty about his undiagnosed developmental struggles and anxiety, he quickly became a beloved member of our community. Ben was recognized as Resident of the Month and took on the role and responsibility of a trustee, demonstrating his commitment to The Haven's mission. With our help, he found employment as a dishwasher at a local restaurant, where his work ethic and reliability earned him praise from his boss. Ben has since moved into transitional housing, within walking distance from his job, ensuring he has the support he needs as he transitions to permanent housing with ongoing case management.
Our residents sometimes fall multiple times before they are ready. Steve returned to The Haven for the fifth time, grappling with addiction after losing his job and serving jail time for a DUI. During his most recent stay, he demonstrated incredible commitment by maintaining employment for about 80% of his time with us. He completed all probation requirements, reinstated his driver's license, and paid off all fines and fees. With his newfound stability, he purchased a trailer in cash and left with $4,000 in savings. His journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of perseverance and the support available at The Haven.
"I wish to express my gratitude for your efforts providing a shelter for me, along with all the other men you serve. The Haven gave me hope when I had none."
